Cookie's Chocolate Cake (untested)

 

This recipe is written in Grammy's handwriting. It is dated April 20, 1955 and is attributed to Lurleen Baker. It is subtitled "Hot Water Devil Food".

Ingredients:

• 1 1/4 cups sugar
• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup Nestle's ever-ready cocoa
• 2 eggs
• 1 cup hot water
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 1/2 cup flour

Instructions:

1. Mix together sugar, shortening, salt and cocoa
2. Add beaten eggs and beat well
3. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add with sifted dry ingredients and vanilla
4. Bake in 2 layers in 350°F oven for 35-40 minutes
