If a recipe says "untested"...

We want to post scans of all the original recipes so everyone in our family can enjoy them even if we haven't gotten around to testing each one in our modern kitchen. As we test each recipe, we will add our notes and photos to the recipes we do test and remove the note "untested" in the title. If you make one of the untested recipes, take a photo of the finished product and send us a note to let us know of your experience so we may include those in the recipes as well.

Pineapple Lemonade (untested)

This recipe is written in fountain pen in Grammy's handwriting. I think it may be one of the older recipes in the box and may even predate the 1940s.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 pint water
  • Juice of 3 lemons
  • 1/2 can grated pineapple
  • 1 quart water

Instructions:
  1. Boil sugar and 1 pint of water for 10 minutes
  2. Let cool
  3. Add lemon juice and grated pineapple
  4. Let stand for 2 hours
  5. Add 1 quart of water right before serving
Serves 6

Sparkle Punch (untested)

This is a recipe that I think is in Grammy's handwriting. I suspect this recipe predates 1952 because of the ingredient "cold tea". Grammy did not consume tea after 1952 when she (along with her husband and two older daughters) was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose members do not partake of tea or coffee.

Makes 4 quarts

Ingredients:
  • Juice of 10 lemons
  • Juice of 10 oranges
  • 3 cups sugar syrup
  • 3 cups cold tea [I would substitute this]
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 3 cups ginger ale
  • Large block of ice [depending on the size of your serving container]

Instructions:
  1. Mix juices, syrup, tea, and water well
  2. Add ginger ale just before serving
  3. Pour over a large block of ice

Hot Spiced Fruit Punch (untested)

This typewritten recipe simply says "for Joanie" in the upper right hand corner. This would be Grammy's youngest daughter (my aunt).

Ingredients:
  • 1–46 ounce can of pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups orange juice
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 20 whole cloves
  • 6 whole allspice
  • 1 sliced orange
  • 8–7 ounce bottles of carbonated lemon-lime beverage

Instructions:
  1. Combine pineapple juice, lemon juice, orange juice, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and sliced orange
  2. Heat mixture to boiling
  3. Simmer for 15 minutes
  4. Strain (reserving orange slices if desired)
  5. Slowly add lemon-lime beverage
  6. Serve immediately

Instructions for serving cold:
  1. Heat just two cups of pineapple juice with spices and orange slices
  2. Allow to simmer 15 minutes
  3. Cool
  4. Add chilled lemon and orange juices
  5. Just before serving, add chilled lemon-lime beverage
Makes about 30–4 ounce servings

  • 2 quarts cold tea [I would substitute this]
  • 1 cup diced cherries
  • 1 cup crushed pineapple

Instructions:
  1. Mix water, grape and lemon juices, and tea

Citrus-Pineapple-Strawberry Punch (untested)

I think this recipe is written in Grammy's handwriting. It is attributed to "Jacobsen". I suspect this recipe predates 1952 because of the ingredient "strong tea". Grammy did not consume tea after 1952 when she (along with her husband and two older daughters) was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose members do not partake of tea or coffee.

I think this recipe would be a great way to use a large batch of strawberries that are almost too ripe.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • juice of 6 lemons
  • 1 thin rind of a lemon
  • juice of 3 orange
  • 1 thin rind of an orange
  • 1 box of crushed strawberries
  • 1 can grated pineapple
  • 1/2 cup strong tea [I would substitute or omit this]
  • 4 cups water
  • cracked ice

Instructions:
  1. In a saucepan, cook the sugar, water and rinds for 5 minutes
  2. Strain the cooked liquid
  3. Add crushed strawberries
  4. Add the remainder of the ingredients
Makes 25 sherbet glasses full

Punch (untested)

This recipe is on the flip side of an Egg Nog recipe (here) and is in the same handwriting that might be Grammy's. I suspect the recipe predates 1952 (see the explanation on the Egg Nog recipe here).

Serves 50
Ingredients:
  • 4 dozen lemons
  • 4 quarts grape juice
  • 2 1/2 pounds sugar
  • 6 quarts ginger ale

Instructions:
  1. Mix lemons, grape juice and sugar well
  2. Let stand an hour
  3. Add ginger ale just before serving

Egg Nog (untested)

This recipe is written in handwriting that I think may be Grammy's. I suspect this recipe predates 1952 because of the ingredient "sherry flavoring" (a brandy-fortified wine). Grammy did not consume alcohol after 1952 when she (along with her husband and two older daughters) was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose members do not partake of alcohol in any form.

Ingredients:
  • 12 egg yolks
  • 12 egg whites
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 8 tablespoons sherry flavoring [I'd use a non-alcoholic substitute]
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions:
  1. Beat yolks
  2. Add sugar gradually
  3. Add flavoring and salt
  4. Fold in stiff egg whites
  5. Beat cream stiff and add
  6. Chill before serving

Sunkist Honey Orange and Cherry "Mock-tail" Recipes

I was hesitant about posting this recipe because I am not an advocate for the consumption of alcohol in any form, but then I realized that these "cocktail" recipes are really "mock-tail" recipes that don't call for alcohol at all. Nice!
