Date Cake (untested)

This recipe is written in fountain pen in Grammy's handwriting and is attributed to Mrs. Shattuck.

Ingredients:

• 3/4 package chopped dates
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 cup hot water
• 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
• 1/2 cup butter
• 2 egg yolks
• 2 1/2 cups clour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• stiff egg whites
• 1/2 cup walnuts
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions are very limited on this recipe:

1. Combine chopped dates, baking soda, and hot water (probably to reconstitute the dates)
2. Let the dates cool
3. Add remaining ingredients

I suspect once everything is combined it is baked in a baking pan at the standard oven temperature (350°F) but I don't know for how long.
