If a recipe says "untested"...

We want to post scans of all the original recipes so everyone in our family can enjoy them even if we haven't gotten around to testing each one in our modern kitchen. As we test each recipe, we will add our notes and photos to the recipes we do test and remove the note "untested" in the title. If you make one of the untested recipes, take a photo of the finished product and send us a note to let us know of your experience so we may include those in the recipes as well.

Molasses Cake (untested)

This recipe is written in Grammy's handwriting with an attribution to the Ford Times and a date of November 1973.

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups flour (Grammy's note: "I used whole wheat flour and blackstrap molasses")
  1. Cream butter and sugar
  2. Beat in eggs
  3. Add baking soda to molasses
  4. Sift dry ingredients together
  5. Add, alternating milk, molasses and dry ingredients
  6. Bake in 9-inch by 13-inch by 2-inch pan in 350°F oven for about 45 minutes
